Rely on Our Professionals to Answer Your Questions Patiently

  • How often should I pump my septic tank?

Homeowners should schedule a routine maintenance pump out by experienced, licensed professionals every three to five years to extend the life of their current system.

  • Can I drive over my septic system?

Shenandoah Valley Septic Service does not recommend anyone to drive over septic tanks or drain lines.

  • Can I pour drinks down my drain?

Hot grease, when cooled, can clog sewer lines or inlet pipes connected to your septic tank.

  • What can be flushed?

You shouldn't flush anything that isn't meant to be in your septic tank.

You should not flush chemicals, random personal hygiene items, contraceptives, drugs or medications, cloth or material, produce, plastic, latex, needles, razors, cat litter, diapers, or feminine products, to name a few.

You should make sure that the toilet paper you are using is biodegradable. Even wipes that say they are "flushable" should not be. Also, limit bleach and antibacterial product usages.

  • How long does my septic system last?

Septic systems don't have a set number of years that they should last. If properly maintained with routine pump-outs, your septic system could last for decades without failing. However, if a failure occurs due to lack of maintenance, the lifespan is significantly reduced.
